Mozambique

Alex and Elsa help us at a training workshop

Mobility work

Between 1995 and 2003 we refurbished, re-equipped and ran four clinics in Mozambique treating amputees and people who needed limb support devices.  Since then we have restored over 10,000 people to mobility in the country.

Capacity building

In 2002, with funding from the EU and the Big Lottery Fund, we began working in partnership with other disability organisations in Mozambique. We provided 13 of these with management and fundraising training, to build their capacity to create lasting change for people with disabilities. Radio clubs

The Big Lottery has also provided funds for a project of radio clubs for disabled people throughout the country. This spreads information about disability on national and local radio; pressurises authorities to make changes in the law and provides meeting places for disabled people to help each other and share experiences (you can read a report on the project by clicking here).

We have been able to expand this work with the support of other donors and there are now 21 clubs operating, with about 30 people in each club. They operate in 4 of the 11 provinces but ideally, we need to extend into more provinces to offer this vital network of support to more people.

There has been an interest in and need by radio club members for training and grants to start small businesses and we are gradually developing the opportunity for this across the radio clubs.

Work with children

Life isn't easy if you're a child with a disability - you might be locked away, not allowed to play with others nor go to school. We have just received funding to start an exciting project in one of the provinces- Nampula. Working with children, their parents and schools this work will help young people with disabilities get a better - and fairer - start in life.
