Zambia

Bringing change nationally

In 2008, POWER International and its sister organisation Power4Good Ireland, began ADEPt- Advancing Disability Equality Project. The aim of this project is to achieve improved rights for disabled people in Zambia by the end of 2010. It is doing this by strengthening legal mechanisms and working with individual cases of discrimination. Access to a variety of public buildings are being assessed and the project has generated a lot of interest in the media. It is expected that it will develop a template for replication in other Southern African countries.

We have a long-standing relationship with the Zambian Association of the Disabled (ZAFOD) having worked with them since 2003. Together, we have helped in the production of a National Plan on Disability, elements of which are already being implemented.

Bringing change in communities

We have an exciting agricultural project currently developing 2 farms out of a potential further 16 farms in some of the poorest areas of Zambia. With training in horticulture, agriculture, management and finance t
his project is a wonderful opportunity for people with disabilities to gain the skills and resources to become self-reliant and work their way out of poverty. They will be accommodated with their families on site and grow their own food and produce for sale in the local markets. We can't wait for the first harvest!

Bringing change to individuals

We have set up a Wheelchairs in Zambia (WIZ) project which to date has funded some 30 wheelchairs. This enables people to live more independently. Below is a picture of Felix Simulunga, who had polio when he was 2 years old. He now works as federal director of our local partner - ZAFOD.
